My name is Jim Mundorf and I design and build
all of the Longhorn products that The Drover
House offers. The Drover House was started with
one pair of horns and a block of wood. I had
searched for a quality pair of longhorns built
similar to the way they were in the days of the
cattle drives. When I couldn't find one I built my
own.
Drover House Quality- There are many differences between the mounts I build and
what you may find other places. I hand carve each mount individually to fit snug into
each horn. Horns are screwed to the centers and wrapped in a 3-4oz. high quality
leather that has been dyed and sealed. Mounting plaques are built using either solid
oak or antique heart pine that has been reclaimed from an old barn. Each pair of
longhorns are unique and each one is truly a work of art and The Drover House
horns are treated that way.
Pricing
"In mounting a pair of horns on wood- for few that are sold are on the original skull- unscrupulous dealers add
several inches to the frontal piece, thus further increasing width. All that is advertised is spread. Yet the natural
twist of horns, natures curves, give them far more character, interest and beauty than mere length. Twists were
characteristic of Texas horns."
-J. Frank Dobie in
The Longhorns

There is much more to a pair of longhorns than its tip to tip length. I price all horns individually based on three
Size- Larger longhorns are more valuable than smaller. This does not just mean the tip to tip length because the
tip to tip length depends on the shape of the horn and the length of the centerpiece. When longhorns were first
mounted for decorations in the late 1800s, they often just cut off the top section of the skull and wrapped it in
leather.  Because of the long process of cleaning skulls longhorns were soon being mounted on wood. Since that
time those wooden centerpieces have continually grown to give greater tip to tip length. I have seen horns that are
priced by their tip to tip length with over a centerpiece over two feet long.  I build all of my mounts to resemble
the size of the animals head and to look similar to those that were built in the days of the cattle drives.

Shape- Some shapes of longhorns are more valuable than others. The most popular and sought after shape is
often called the Texas twist. This is a horn that curves upward and also has a spiral or twisting shape. The shape
and height of the horns also affects the tip to tip length. The more curve a pair of horns has the shorter it will
measure. If you could take a high curving twisted pair of horns and stretch them out flat they would measure
much longer than if they were in their original shape.

Color- There is nothing else in the world that has color similar to a polished longhorn. The more color the more
valuable and uniquely colored horns are also more valuable.

hollow and they grow around a bone that comes out from the skull. The layers of the horns are very thin and
consist of different colors. When the horns are sanded down it removes these layers. The outer layers are dirty,
dull and rough. Once these layers are sanded off the color is revealed. The different layers of horn are often
different colors and because the layers are so thin the colors blend together resulting in a beautiful material
unlike anything else.
Natural Longhorns- These horns look just as they did when on the
animal. They offer a more rustic look. They have a rough texture. Some
are rougher than others showing wear spots, and growth rings at the base
of the horn. They are wrapped in a stone oil sealed leather which adds to
the rustic look. The mounting plaques are made using an antique pine that
has been reclaimed from an old barn. The wood is planed down and
sealed.
One of the best pairs of horns I have ever put together with excellent size, shape, and color.
Polished Longhorns- The polished longhorns offer a more finished look. They are wrapped in a dyed and sealed
leather and mounted to a solid oak plaque that has been stained and sealed.  Some are finished with tacks and a
curved plaque this is done to slightly resemble the Victorian look of the 1880s. Others are finished with a oval
shaped plaque and rope.

"I liked the layout of the website. I also liked that the price listed was the price including shipping cost. The
steer horns were delivered in great condition and the appearance of the horns were the same as on the website.
I would use this site again."

Many of the other horn mounts available are put together as quickly and cheaply as possible. Horns are nailed
to a cylinder of wood or PVC pipe and then wrapped with naugahyde, vinyl or cheap upholstery leather. They
are then given a hanger or attached to a piece of unfinished pine.
