The idea for creating sculptures using Longhorns came from years of working with horns and developing a deep appreciation for the material. The colors and shapes are like nothing else found in nature. Each piece is created to focus purely and simply on the beauty of the horn. While sorting through the hundreds of horns that I work with each year I set aside the ones with the most beautiful, interesting, and unique colors and shapes and those are what are used for the sculptures.
Scarred
Scarred
An absolutely magnificent pair of twisting longhorns that are full of color. This animals left horn was damaged somehow during his life and the horn still shows a deep scar. Some may see scars as blemishes and try to hide them. I find them to be my favorite features and wanted to display it in a way that could be examined, picked up and touched. The piece offers an amazing contrast between the rough, scarred area, and the rest of the horns that near perfection. Full of beautiful shades of whites, grays, browns, and black, and nearly perfectly symmetrical. This pair is an excellent example of the beauty that grows in these horns and the harsh natural environment that they grow in. The horns are stuck together although there is nothing visibly joining them. There is no base, the horns sit directly on any flat surface. Click images to enlarge.
